Wow, I haven't posted in a while. I didn't think that it was that long. With that said. I hope everyone had a very wonderful holiday season. Those of us who were slammed with the blizzard of the century in east, I just know the spring will be a beautiful treat.
Now on to business. I have been working hard on getting my new zine out. Its a take on most of my travels through the USA over the last year. No big details but its a spyglass view of some of the wonderful places and people I had the pleasure of seeing and meeting. The biggest of treat of all is my interview with the renowned ARTCHIX Helga Strauss, oh my she is such a sweet soul and a patient one too. She has been anxious to see the finished work. (I promise Helga its just about there). She is truly a creative muse in the altered and mixed media art world. Her site is a collection of wonderful goodies and she has even shared a treat with us in the interview. Thanks Helga. So I really hope you will pick up a copy. Its no Somerset but its fun, interactive and informative. It will be available two ways. Full color or black and white. Details are coming real soon.

Tennessee or Bust!

Well, I am about to embark on my next road trip to Tennessee. I am traveling with my Sofa King Cool Girls for a week of Crafting, Exploring and just plan acting a fool. I will state this now, what happens in TN stays in TN. (hee hee hee) Well, we will share some of the visit. I am so excited. We each will be teaching an art technique and then off to find some flea markets, outlets and antique malls. Wow, the week will probably fly by. I am blessed to have such a cool set of artsy friends. I will be sharing more on my return.

Well, I have discovered a way to keep my mind and creativity active. Joining these cool blog sites that feature a monthly theme. First one I joined was Mixed Media Monday and the next Alter It Monthly. What a cool concept. No mailing and no pressure. Simply create, download and share. How easy is that? I remember so well what Leighanna Light once told me. "Do something everyday, even if its just painting gesso on a canvas. It keeps your creative mind flowing". That is so true. So, maybe this is the new thing in the A/MM world? Love It!

Heading to the shore this summer? Check out Greetings from Geralyn located in the Arcade Pavillion on Cookman Avenue. Wow, finally it looks like we will have a cool spot to create and shop in. "The Paint Place"

Wow, I finally did it. I set up a show and sale at The Paint Place in Asbury Park, NJ. The show features my collage art pieces. I can't tell you how many people have asked me when I would show my work. Well, I dabbled a bit at the local gallery in Red Bank, NJ and it boosted my confidence. It is really a test to put yourself and creativity out there. I've been out there before, but since 9/11 things have been pretty slow. But my faith is strong and God told me its time move it along. I can't get anymore push than that. (smile)
The Paint Place is a lovely boutique that carries an ecclectic collection of beautiful handmade italian mosaics (created by the proprietor), jewelry and local artisans work. It is located at 605 Cookman Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ. My show runs from July 2 - 19th. You can meet me the artist on July 11th between 3-6 pm. Hope to see you there.

Hot Fun in the Summertime

Just got back from giving my sinuses a vacation. How does that work? I went to Scottsdale AZ for a week. I just have to say 2 things, beautiful city and I could breathe. I was taken back at how lovely that area of Arizona was. We drove from Las Vegas to Scottsdale and it was fabulous. We stayed at the beautiful Pheonician Hotel and Resort. I have never been before but one thing is guaranteed, I will be back. I had fun visiting the art museums, shops and the very very cool stamp stores and their owners. The city people were wonderful and friendly. I want to thank both proprietors of the Frenzy Stamper and the Creative Quest for keeping my creative juices flowing while on vacation. If you go to Scottsdale stop in their shops you won't come out empty handed. Guaranteed. I can attest to that. (hee hee hee) For me, this was one of my favorite vacations. "Hot Fun In The Summertime"!

What's New on My Etsy

I know I do a variety of different art pieces and hopefully I do them well. Paper arts still seem to be my favorite draw. With hundreds of different techniques and thousands of different products (I am sure I have one of each in my studio) I am able to experiment and create pieces that hopefully bring pleasure and delight to the eye. Its amazing how much I have grown from the first time I sat at my kitchen table and created my first ATC over 3 years ago. I have since defined my own style, migrated up to traveling to different workshops around the country and even landed a teaching gig with some fabulous women in CT. This is from a chick who used to be scared to fly. I still am a little but I will drive somewhere. (chuckle) I have met some fabulous people and engaged in the most interesting adventures and conversations. I neatly pack all of this in my art memories, so that years from now I can reflect back and say I really came to life with that one ATC.

I have always been facinated with collage work. I think one of the best was Romare Bearden. His work had so many elements and each time you see a piece you find something you didn't see before. Snow Play

Did I mention that I really don't like living in a 4 season state? Well I don't. Simply because this year we have had over 20+ inches of snow in the last week and a half. Ugh!!!!!! I am really ready to move to a warm climate. I am really reaching that point. Between getting stuck in the house and sinus issues. I think I'll risk the rattlesnakes and move west. (smile).
Well, now that I have vented. Here's what I did while I was snowed in. I love vintage photos and work with them more than I paint sometimes. So I created some funky backgrounds and added a some vintage beauties to start a series of Diva Pages. Its amazing what boredom can produce. Enjoy!

When devastating things like the earthquake in Haiti happen, we want so much to understand and know why. But, I remember long ago my mother telling me never ask why God does things it is not for us to question his actions. But understand that there is comfort in knowing he does everything for a reason. My heart bleeds for those who suffered such an overwhelming experience. I did what was in my power to help and I know I will do more. Its my prayer that if everyone in the US would just send $1 to the relief fund it would be amazing how much money could be raised to help these people. I know some good will come out of this. Already, the world has stepped up to the plate willing to help people who have known nothing but strife. I hope everyone will try to do something, because we never know when it could happen to us.

This Christmas

Let me start by saying I have so much to be thankful for during Christmas. This Christmas I am the host house. Family will be visiting (can't wait to see them). Also, this year will be much different than the past years. My children are all grown. My daughter is preparing to have her first christmas tree in NY and my son is 18 and having his last official at home christmas before college. We are about to become empty nesters. Things will never be quite the same. I will miss the excitement of the kiddies, the baking cookies, the official reading of "The Polar Express" and the glass of milk with the plate of santa cookies. My husband would bite each one to make it appear that Santa nibbled a few. So it will be a little different waiting for a train to arrive or a drive to retrieve someone. But over all I still love the reason for the season. Have a blessed holiday.

Oooh La La! I think everyone is familiar with Josephine. She was a stunning beauty that would have given Beyonce(still love you girl) a run for her money. I decided to make her the next contest. I hope there are some fans out there that want to do her up in style. I drew this picture from an old photo I came across.

So the rules are the same as previous contest. Grand prize is a $25.00 money order. You will also receive a copy of all the entries submitted. I will from this point on be putting a watermark on the posted entries (to protect my contest participants original works). This will not be on the collage sheets. from my what I call better than a spa vacation. I spent 5 days with some of the most wonderful artistic women on the east coast and beyond. I have been anticipating the "ART IS" event for a whole year, this year's theme was Alice in Wonderland. Believe me I was in ART Heaven. I kept thinking to myself how I was so in my element. I wish I could live in a commune with artists like us and just do art all day. Wouldn't that be fun. (smile). I really have to thank the coordinators of ART IS Ellen and Sallianne who's unstoppable energy kept a positive flow. It was such a memorable 5 days. I can't wait for next year and its theme will be the Wizard of Oz. Now I am off to find the yellow brick road. The art piece above is one of the classes I took from Kecia Deveney.

The DIVA Design

This is the second contest for those of you who like a challenge. I have created this fun drawing of a cheerful young lady. I think it would be fun to give her a Diva Makeover. You can use any method you like within the mixed media, altered art and paper art world as long as the image remains the same. Rest forever in Peace

Several years ago my daughter attended a college program at MICA and one of Mr. Kennedy's relatives attended the same program. That was the first and only time I saw Mr. Kennedy in person. He and his wife were attending the closing ceremony. My husband and I were seated right behind him. It was an ah moment. I am very happy that he was able to accomplish so many positive things in his life. He should be at peace now.

What have we lost?

Today, was another numbing moment. Two Icons of Hollywood took their final journey home. Farrah Fawcett, may you rest in peace. Michael Jackson, may you now find the peace you so desperately sought in this world. Not since Marvin Gaye have I shed a tear for a fallen celebrity but last night I did. He was bizarre, yes. But he was also one of the most tragic childhood star stories to be a part of Hollywood.

I grew up with Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 playing on our record player and excited to have my Michael Jackson kissing poster on the bedroom wall. My sisters and I used to rush to buy the new J5 single when it came out and play it over and over again. Even though money was tight. My sister and I chatted last night and she remembers waking up one morning as a teen to "I'll Be There" and falling for the J5 then. They were and will always be a memorable sound. He was a unique individual and the world was always looking thru his stained glass windows. The older he got the more curiouser he became. Facial changes, long hair and quirky ways made him seem strange to people. But I think he never had a chance to live a normal childhood life and that probably affected his psyche over time. It must be so overwhelming to have never been out of the spotlight. I wonder what he saw when he looked in the mirror, when he was alone? Well, we will never know. I just hope that now he will be remembered for his outstanding concert performances and deep in your soul music that stays with you forever. I don't care what people say he was an Icon, he was and will remain my Icon of Pop Music. Michael, enjoy your journey home.

Life without RAIN!

Well, finally I was able to go out of the house and into my backyard for a brief moment. It has been raining so much here I feel like I am living in London or Seattle. Actually, I understand Seattle has not seen rain in over 30 Days. Ironic.

So anywho, I got and was able to take a few pics of my cuties MAX and BAILEY. I also took some photos of my flowers. Enjoy them.

Some Good News!!!!

I am so excited to have been selected as ARTCHIX Artist of the Month (March)! During my birthday month too. Woo Hoo! I was so honored. Oh my gosh, I love that site the products are so my style. Helga and the staff are soooo kewl! Keep an eye out for me.

Also, good news I will be teaching at Artfest for the Soul this Oct 2009. Another fabulous venue of really talented artist who meet annually create and share talents. This Thanksgiving will remain a memory for my youngest. He is just about to turn seventeen and life has been dealing him some cruel cards. The first was the death of his friend's father just before Thanksgiving. He died of cancer and left behind a young man the same age as my son. My heart bleeds for this child because his mother passed when he was only twelve. I can only imagine his pain. I have seen him and he seems to being doing well, but I know once the friends and family have gone the pain seeps in to claim its place around him. When I took my son over to see him I saw pain in my son's eyes I have not seen before. You see, my son is very emotional and cares deeply for those around him. It is always important to him for family and friends to be together. So when someone he cares about faces a loss it touches him emotionally. I am thankful to God that he was blessed with such a caring soul.

But while dealing with this situation. I was at work and he called me. I couldn't understand him through the tears and pain. Once he collected himself, he told me two of his friends were in a fatal car accident Thanksgiving night. One was killed and the other in critical condition. He was beyond distraught. This was unbelievable. How could this happen to two young and promising teenagers. All of his friends gathered together to see the one in the hospital. But one of my son's friends was extremely distraught. I held him tightly and let him cry. This is such a tough lesson to learn at an early age. I promised them things would be better with time. I assured them that their friend would want them to continue on. He was with God now. They all had trouble sleeping, which is completely normal. I also want to give my son space and freedom for a while to help heal. I believe the lesson did hit home. My son told me the other day when he gets his license in a couple of weeks, he will put their names on his steering wheel to remind him of driving safely. So with that said, I send my prayers and thoughts to family of the young man who lost his life and I will pray for a speedy recovery for the young man who survived. I will also pray for my son to hold their memories dear but not to dwell on the pain. May God bless him.

Well, where has the time gone. It is already Turkey Day. I am hoping that you take this day to enjoy lots of goodies. Don't worry about the calories, most will burn off on Black Friday when you are out shopping and fighting the crowds. Although, I plan on staying in and creating gifts this year. I know I know what about helping boost the economy? I already have through the craft stores, actually I could open one up in my home. *chuckle chuckle* All the crafters in the house can relate. I am overwhelmed with emotion this morning. Tears are flowing from my eyes. Not from sadness but joy overwhelming joy. I never thought I, my children, my family would ever see a Black Man as President. It proves that this country is moving on from the nonsense and ignorance that has held our country hostage for so long. Young and old alike have said enough. Thank you , thank you, thank you. This was the first election that I opened my wallet to contribute to a campaign. Why was this so important, because I had hope that this man was given to the country for a reason. He will deliver us from the dark cloud that has blinded us for so long. He is a decent, fresh individual who was consistant with his vision for our country. He will lead us to greatness once again. At this moment I am truly proud to be an American! GO OB, God Bless President Obama!

Life Bent with Tragedy

I really want to express a message of sympathy to a young star whose world was turned beyond upside down last Friday. It is beyond comprehension the pain this girl and her family are feeling right now. There have been a few comments that this happens everyday, why is it different. There is no difference, any life taken in such a tragic and unnecessary manner is horrific. I really can't figure people out sometimes and maybe its not my job to try. But I get up everyday go thru my daily routine and repeat the process over and over again. The difference is that it never crosses my mind to infringe on another person's life. People make you angry, upset and bewildered sometimes but move on its part of life's lessons.

Is it possible that the generation this person or people come from are so hardened that they disregard these life lessons and human life. The worst part is taking the life of a child. That child didn't ask to be part of this conflict. He woke up that morning, I'm sure happy and looking forward to a day of play and learning with his friends. The only solace in all of this is he is now in a better place with his grandma and uncle. If all this was all this cold world had to offer his little soul he just may be in a better place. Shine on sweetie.

FALL IS REALLY HERE

Late this past summer I took a picture of these flowers in my garden. The color was so beautiful and I wanted to be able to preserve it. This way I can gaze at them when the weather gets bad. If you look close you will see a small bee enjoying it too.

Today, we were hit with snow. I couldn't believe it, Snow, October go figure. Does this mean we will have a White Christmas? It would be nice. Seems like for the past few years we either see rain or just normal weather. No snow. So maybe there will be a change of pace this time. Did I say Christmas? Geez, the time does fly.

Well I am always reading other peoples blogs and find that they often talk about their families and things they enjoy doing etc. etc. etc. So I thought I would post my two little babies on the site and periodically post their shananagins. Because believe me life with two schnauzers is never boring.

Max is my oldest he is black and silver and will be 12 this year. He does have a heart condition but my younger one keeps him active. He is a bit spoiled for me and wants to always go with me in the car (and doesn't even like it), in my bedroom anywhere I go in the house. The best thing about him is he is always will to please, when we got my younger one he was indifferent but never intolerant. I think he was trying to make a good impression for me. (smile)

Bailey is my younger one he is solid black and definitely holds the second child syndrome title. When he was a young puppy, I wasn't sure we would ever be friends. Now, I can't imagine my world without him. He's headstrong, noisy, protective and did I mention SPOILED. But he does have one redeeming quality he is very cuddly and loves to snuggle with me or any member of the family. He wants so badly to take rank over Max, but believe me Max ain't having it.

I get a big kick out of when they come upstairs there is one large pillow for them to lay on. If Max gets there first he sprawls over the whole thing and Bailey is left to squeeze onto any corner he will fit. As for Bailey he is always courteous and makes room for Max. Go figure.

Computer Play

Playing around with a computer program. I changed these beauties into another one. It went from the black and white to the colorful version of beauty. Fun Stuff.

Its amazing what you can teach yourself when you have a little bit of spare time.

Now I just have to teach myself how to rearrange the photos so they line up with each other. Chuckle Chuckle.

what dreams are made of! I recently spent Columbus Day weekend with a wonderful group of artistic women. Some I knew, but most I just met. The wonderful event was Art 4 the Soul. A gathering of artistic souls that create beautiful works of art. I have to say that Sallianne and Ellen really know how to put on a workshop fair. Bravo!

Happy New Year!

2008 is shaping up to be my year! So many things have happened in a short period of time. Its about time too. I am so happy to see 2007 go. Thou it had so good points, it was hectic, chaotic, and challenging to the very end. It ended up with my older schnauzer needing emergency surgery(3 weeks before XMAS) for what they said were acorns. Well, they went in and NO ACORNS. Ugh! 2007 Good riddance!!!!

I stated that 2008 would be my year, where should I begin. First, I come home from vacation and find that a piece I submitted to Somerset Studio has been published. A gallery compilation was well received. Thank you to all the ladies who submitted inches. Props are due. My work has been accepted and distributed throughout the Art-O-Mat revolution. So cool. All this has happened within January. What could be next. :o)

What's this you ask? Its when all the cool ladies from MOCHA(Monmouth and Ocean Counties Happy Artists) get together and take mini seminars to learn new techniques. This year yours truly was one of the honored guests invited to teach. It really was a lot of fun. There were a few things I might do differently next time. But over all I think everyone left my group with a sense that they learned some fun new techniques. So since I haven't posted in a bit I thought it might be fun to do a piece about my adventure. SUMMER IS COMING TO A CLOSE

Geez, I can't believe summer is coming to close so quickly. Summer should be 4 months long. (smile). Well I uploaded some fun fashion ATCs to get us ready for fall. I joined in on a cool fashion ATC swap at the SWAP BOT. These little babies will be mailed off to my swap partners. I hope they like them.

I was inspired to do some fashion related swaps in honor of my daughter getting another internship at Vogue. Maybe she can keep me "on point". (smile).

PUTTING WHAT WE SELL TO GOOD USE!

If I ever say I never sell anything on there again smack me. I had one of the most successful weekends ever selling on there. I was singing all the way to post office. I love EBAY. I just happened to sitting at the computer and decided to browse the site. Hmm, after looking over some of the different items people had for sale. I went digging in my closet for an old designer handbag and some designer jewelry I had laying around. After a little picture work, wallah. Three days later I am off to the post office and my PayPal account had some cobwebs removed. I am a happy camper. Well off to the art supply store. I hope you didn't think I would spend the money on anything else. I did pick up a wonderful new magazine that I hope will inspire me to recreate my blog. Its by Somerset Studio "Artful Blogging". It looks very cool and extremely inspirational. I'm sure I will put it to good use. Happy Crafting.

Garage Sale Success

Garage Sales can really inspire the muse in all of us. The other day I went to a garage sale and actually made out like a bandit. Oh the treasures you can find in someone else's trash. Being an altered artist that creative mind can just start ticking away at record speed, especially if you are put in a yard sale with craft items. Yoo Hoo!!!!
I walked away with delicious items like a gourmet chef in newly opened french market. Scrabble and board games, Trivia Pursuit, Old License Plates, Wooden Letters, Tea Tins, Old Life Magazine, Gold Bird Cage and more. All for just $10.00. Damn I'm good. Now lets see what I can come up with from these goodies. See you soon.

Faith's Healer

Here is a piece I made called "Faith's Healer". Since so much is going on in the world around us these days. I think this piece represents a warm and solemn place that we all need. The gentle image. The depth of the tapestry blanket representing all that is around us. Perched in front the milagros heart with the peaceful butterfly inside hoping to be released to bring peace and calm. When you look at this piece allow yourself to be taken to a peaceful place to "Faith's Healer". Enjoy!

"Add a little Art to your Day"

Along with my new artsy attitude, I am vowing to add at least one piece of art to my day. Today I created this little number from an overseas magazine ad(don't know which one and can't remember what ad). But the technique is one I saw in Somerset Magazine. Damn, wish I had thought of it first. ;o) It was a fun painting technique. Altering an existing photo to a fantasy creation. A special technique that I am sure I will use again. Its been a month already and I have seen more in this past month then I have in the past year. My life is certainly coming to a changing point. Now that my children are older, I have decided that it may be time to take care of me. I have come to terms with myself. Earlier in May I went on a fantastic journey to Art and Soul in Hampton VA. I met so many wonderful and talented people. I was truly in my element. I dreamed of living in an artist colony where we could all just live and create art together everyday. But alas the real world rarely possesses a place like this. I mean we do have to pay for shelter and food. ;o)

I have come to terms with myself and decided that this would be what I want out of life to travel, meet and create art with like minds. Most of my life, actually 33 years of it, I have surrounded myself with people who don't have interests or care about the same ideas or things I do. I understand now how that has stifled my growth for so long. Well I am ready to expand on my journey and grow further as my art muse calls me. Being self taught sometimes I can be unsure about what I want to pursue. But I think that's where I will have the most fun is finding out what things I like best. Because I am going to try my hand at each art technique and see what tickles my fancy. Wish me luck!

SOME DAYS JUST END BETTER THAN OTHERS

This just happened to be one of those days. Over the weekend I was really down in the dumps, I mean really over the edge. I know some people may experience this when they reach a certain place on their timetable. But honestly, I felt like I was stranded on an island. The worst part yet, no one was even looking for me. Rough huh?

Well anyway, I woke up this morning and kicked myself into gear for Art day. Which was very successful. I had to create 9 ATCs for a Faith Ringgold swap. I then received a call from someone I hadn't heard from in over 6 months. Best of all I received a Secret Sister Birthday Package from one of my Friends thru Art, Ms. Carolyn Hoobler. She really outdid herself. Her gift was filled with delightful ethnic treats to alter cards and books with as well as my favorite M&Ms. Best of all was a beautiful box that she created just for me. It really had a special meaning. The box has 3 little girls on top and they remind me of my sisters and myself when we were growing up. I was the youngest. How did she know? Big quodos for that!
This was a delightful day and get this it was Monday!

It has been a while, but I am among the living. Gosh, I have been so busy. Busy doing what you might ask. Well, for starters I help out in Suze Weinberg's Design Studio and its been busy. I also recently taught an altered book class there. It was fun. The ladies really showed their creativity and enjoyed the various background techniques I demonstrated for them. Plus, I've been trying to create art in between these things as well as think of new ideas. Do you think my brain is on overload yet? ;o) Its all fun and keeps me on my creative toes.

Altered Book Journey

Altering has never been so much fun. It comes in second to trading cards. Which will always be my first love. When I saw the shape of this book, I immediately feel in love with it. I kept visualizing the images of curvy voluptuous women gracing the pages. But, I waited until the perfect picture came along before I began my creation. I am looking forward to the next one, this little red hot number definitely awakened my art muse. Enjoy.

How delightful it is that all but 1 of my cards are spoken for. I really would like to thank all the interest that I had for my PlayDay Cards. Everyone was so kind with their comments. I do have one card unspoken for and that is card #8. So its first come first serve like before. I will be posting new art in a few days.

On to other news, a few posts back I spoke of someone I knew who suffered a debilitating illness on New Year's. Well I am delighted to say she has made a miraculous recovery. She does still have a long road ahead, but she's still with us. Which definitely reaffirms my belief in the power of prayer. Thank you Lord!

Today my art muse wanted to surface and play. I had a terrible bout with my sinuses. This unusual weather will be the death of me. But enough whining.
I belong to a group who's main focus is to alter fashion magazine photos. Mind you, these are not for sale they are merely just for fun and trade.
I really liked the image I chose. When I was flipping through the magazine she just struck me as one of those old style rockstars with an updated twist. Sorta like a modern day Janis or Grace. The title of the piece is "Letters to a Rock Star" as if she collected them. Keeping them under lock and key. ;o) Enjoy!

This is an emotional blog for me, because I learned last night that the very first group I joined in my altered art experiences Owner has fallen seriously ill. She was always an extremely kind person to me, often helping with the site until I was comfortable making my way around. She also would send me little treasures that she thought I would like. What a kind soul. I can only wish her and her loved ones many many prayers of recovery. She will remain in my thoughts each day. May God Bless You!

I am still feeling my way around a bit. But I uploaded this image of a postcard I altered for a swap awhile ago. I simply fell hard for the altered arts. I know there are many of us out there that try many different things just to see if we like them. Some we do for a while and others we kick to curb immediately. Well, I started my altered art experience last year roaming the net and came upon BMuse's group. It looked like fun so I made my first 3 ATCs and traded 1. It was true love from there. How wonderful to collect such small pieces of someones creativity and imagination. The plan is to collect as many as I can and hang them gallery style near my entry way or maybe my powder room (to keep visitors from peeking elsewhere) :o). Anywho enjoy the art.

One New Year's Resolution Down

It was my goal to set up a blog page for the coming new year (2007). I guess I have done it. Well with a little help from my hubby. I am not sure I will be able to post everyday but I will do my best, life is a little quiet right now. :o) My next New Year Resolution is to organize my studio. Wow, this is worst than the weight loss thing. I have been buried in my studio for two day so far and I feel like my progress is still beyond reach. I never knew paper goods could get so out of control. But I won't give up. I plan on having this baby in shape by the end of the month. Wish me luck. Anyhow, good luck to all of you who made NYR. Hang in there.
